Odd and Even numbers

What do we know about odd numbers? What do we know about even numbers? Over the last week we have made a few discoveries! Check them out and see if our discoveries are correct!

 Discovery #1 = odd + odd = even

 Discovery #2 = even + even = even

 Discovery #3 = odd + odd + odd = odd

What do we do in MST?

What happens during MST time?  It is a bit of a mystery if you are not involved in one of the groups.  The following videos are of each MST group.  The videos are clips of a normal, everyday session :) The videos were taken on an ipad, so the sound is a bit hard to hear sometimes.

MST group 1:  Olivia, Harlem, Xzaviyah, Zeplyn and Zyprus.

MST group 2: Renee, Manaia, Miracle, Te Winika and Fonua.

Part-whole strategies

Over the last week both MST groups have been learning a new addition strategy.  The groups are learning to split numbers to make 10 (or another tidy number).

Here are some fotobabbles from the MST 2 group, showing how they can use different strategies to add numbers together.

Te Winika's strategy to add lots of numbers

Today Miss Bolton gave the MST 2 group a problem to solve. Everyone shared their solutions. Miss Bolton recorded Te Winika's explanation because it was a good way of using adding to 10 to help solve a problem and it was an example of an early Stage 5 addition strategy. Listen to the Fotobabble to hear Te Winika's strategy.

Learning strategies

One way that we are learning during MST time is to repeat other student's strategies and ideas. We do this to make sure we are actively listening to each other and we understand what they are saying. This audioboo recording is of MST group 1 listening to each other and repeating a multiplication strategy. Remember to leave a comment if you think we've done a good job!

Multiplication Strategy - Repeated addition

We have been learning to use addition as a way to solve multiplication equations.  Here is a recording of MST group 2 explaining how to use repeated addition.

Photos of MST people using multiplication strategies

Fonua is using groups to solve the equation 6x6.
Te Winika was using his memory of a times table poster in his class to help solve the equation 4x8.
Xzaviyah and Zyprus have used groups of counters to help solve their equations.
